Family planning activities in Kwang-ju Red Cross Hospital

Abstract
For a period of 9 months from August 1971 to April 1972, 232 cases of loops were inserted at Kwang-ju Red Cross Hospital, as a part of family planning activities, and the following results were obtained.
1. Most of the IUD acceptors (66%) were heavily concentrated in the group of ages 30 to 39, and average age was 34.3.
2. Among the new IUD acceptors, the educational level appears to be higher comparing with previous acceptors.
3. The average number of living children among well educated women(college) was 2.9, whereas,, among lowly educated women(no formal education) was 5.2 and the average number of living children of IUD acceptors was 3.8. (Sons 2.1 & Doughers 1.7)
4. 78 cases out of all cases have experienced past acceptance of IUD, and the majority of IUD acceptors except the 78 cases favored oral pill previously.
5. Over half of IUD acceptors (58.6%0) have experienced more than once of artificial interrupion of pregnancy.
6. The number of live birth were almost same between IUD acceptors and non acceptors, however, the number of pregnancies and induced interruptions were higher in IUD acceptors.
7. In this series, 13.8% of women who have no son adopted contraception of IUD.
8. The number of loop removal was 17(7.3%) out of 232 cases, and the main reasons for this removal were pain (41.2%) and abnormal bleeding-C23.5%) The pregnancy -rate was 1.6
9. The expulsion rate of loop was 2.6% and the reinsertion to this cases were done in 5 out of cases.
